Günümüzde modern tıbbın gelişen tüm olanakları sunulmasına karşın yine de tedavilerin yetersiz kaldığı, ölümün beklendiği son dönemler yaşanmaktadır. Bazen günler, aylar sürebilen bu dönemde hastalar ve hasta yakınları pek çok tıbbi, psikososyal, etik ve yasal sorunla karşı karşıya kalmaktadır. Buna karşın son dönem hastalarına ait klinik belirtiler ve tedavi yaklaşımları konusundaki bilgiler yetersizdir. Özellikle son dönem hastalarında sıklıkla izlenen korku, kaygı ve depresif belirtilerin tanınması ve tedavisi konusundaki girişimler hastanın bu dönemindeki yaşam kalitesini arttırmada önemlidir. Biz bu derlemede son dönem hastalarında, klinik görünüm, ruhsal belirtiler, klinik gidiş ve psikiyatrik tedavi yaklaşımlarını gözden geçirdik.

Today, even if we have all facilities of modern medicine and most advanced technology ever known, even though not as much as it used to be, we still, come to a point and see that our treatment is not enough for patient to recover and live. Patient gets closer to death each day and death could take days to months. In this period both patients and his relatives face with some medical, psychosocial, legal and ethical difficulties. Whereas there is very limited knowledge about the terminally ill patients’ clinical symptoms and caring options in literature; especially, it’s very important to recognize anxiety, fear, and depressive symptoms in palliative care patient for improving the quality of remaining life. In this review we examined clinical aspects, psychiatric symptoms, clinical course and psychiatric treatment in terminally ill patient.
