Maddeye özgü uyumluluk oranı değişimlemesinde, çoğunlukla uyumlu olan kelimelerle gözlemlenen Stroop etkisi çoğunlukla uyumsuz olan kelimelerle gözlemlenen etkiye nazaran daha büyüktür (Jacoby ve ark., 2003). Stroop deneylerinde uyumlu uyarıcılardaki okuma hatalarını tespit etmek mümkün değildir. Maddeye özgü uyumluluk oranı değişimlemesinde, çoğunlukla uyumlu kelimeler büyük oranda uyumlu renklerle yazıldığından, bu uyarıcı grubunda tespit edilemeyen istemsiz okumaların sayısı da büyük olacaktır. Bu çalışmada istemsiz okumanın maddeye özgü uyumluluk oranı etkisindeki rolü incelenmiştir. Bu amaçla, kelimeleri tersten yazarak okumayı zorlaştırmanın çoğunlukla; uyumlu uyarıcılardaki kolaylaştırıcı Stroop etkisini değiştirip değiştirmediği araştırılmıştır. Deney sonuçları, kelimeler ters yazıldığında çoğunlukla uyumlu uyarıcılarla gözlemlenen kolaylaştırıcı Stroop etkisinin azaldığını göstermiştir. Kelimenin yönü çoğunlukla uyumsuz uyarıcılardaki kolaylaştırıcı ve bozucu Stroop etkisini değiştirmemiştir. Bu çalışma ile ilk defa olarak istemsiz okumanın maddeye özgü uyumluluk oranı etkisindeki rolü gösterilmiştir.

Item Specific Proportion Congruence (ISPC) manipulation produces larger Stroop effect for mostly-congruent items, and smaller for mostly-incongruent items (Jacoby et al., 2003). In Stroop experiments it is not possible to detect reading errors in the congruent stimuli. In an ISPC manipulation, in the mostly congruent condition, the majority of stimuli are congruent, so the proportion of undetected word-reading errors would be higher in this condition, compared to the mostly-incongruent condition. In this study, we investigated whether or not inadvertent word reading has a role in the ISPC effect. To this end, the ISPC effect observed with normal and difficult-to-read stimuli were compared. Reading was made difficult by presenting words upside-down. Our results showed that Stroop facilitation observed with mostly-congruent items diminished with upside-down stimuli. However, orientation of the words did not affect the facilitatory or inhibitory Stroop effects observed with mostly-incongruent items. The present study showed, for the first time, the role of inadvertent reading in the ISPC effect.
