Ergenlik hızlı gelişme ve değişme ile giden bir süreç­tir. Epilepsi insidansı ergenlik döneminde yüksek ol­masına rağmen, bu konu yayınlanan kitap ve dergi­lerde çok az ilgi görmüştür. Ergenlikte epilepsi tanı­sının konması ve antiepileptik ilaç tedavisine başlan­ması önemlidir. İlaç yan etkileri özellikle kozmetik olanları ergenlik döneminde önemli olabilir. Psiko-sosyal, eğitim, iş bulma, araba kullanımı, boş za­manlar aktiviteleri, seksüel fonksiyonlar, fertlite, ve kontrasepsiyon; epilepsisi olan ergenin karşılaştığı özel problemlerdir. Epileptik ergenlerle ilgili çalışma­larda, arkadaşlık kuramama, aile ve yaşıtlarla ilişki­lerde zorlukların olması, sosyal uyumsuzlukları, kendine güvensizlik, depresif davranışları da içine alan birçok önemli sorunları olduğu gösterilmiştir.

Adolescence is a time of rapid development and chan­ging. Although incidence of epilepsy is high in adoles­cence, this subject receives little attention in many books and journals. It is assential to establish the di­agnosis of epilepsy and the decision to treat seizures with antiepileptic drugs is another major event in adolescent's life. The side effects of drugs especially cosmetic effects may be important consideration in adolescence. Adolescents with epilepsy face special problems such as psychosocial, education, employ­ment, driving, leisure time habits, sexual functions, fertility, and contraception. Studies on epileptic ado­lescents show several important problems including absence of friendship, difficulties in family and group relationship, social maladjustment, poor self confi­dence and depressive behaviors. Epilepsy in adoles­cence and the problems caused by epilepsy are seri­ous concerns that must be better understood.
